We had a great Regional Symposium August 6th.  We'll discuss the symposium, and get feedback from Joyce Kullman, Vasculitis Foundation, and Dr. Jason Springer, Director, KU Med Vasculitis Clinic.

Meeting Minutes, May 14, 2016 Meeting

The Kansas City Support Group met on Saturday, May 14, 2016 in room 125 BEST Conference Center, University of Kansas Edwards Campus.  Present were Brad and Debbie Yates, Glenn and Arlene Kullman, Allison Lint, Linda and Jim Gibson, Julie Tanner, Mary Tanner, Sharon and Luther Brown, Jude Devonshire, Richard Gorell, Fran Totta, Denny and Ruth Hale and Joyce Kullman.

Dr. Jeremy Stevenson, psychologist from University of Kansas Medical Center, presented a program on Living with a Chronic Condition.  He concluded by answering questions from the audience.
Denny Hale, current support group leader, reminded everyone that May was National Vasculitis Awareness Month.  He showed Vasculitius Foundation brochures that included labels with KC Vasculitis Support Group information.  Some of the brochures had been distributed to physician clinic offices.  He asked attendees to take some of the brochures to their physician's offices.

Joyce Kullman, Executive Director of the Vasculitis Foundation, announced that registration opens Monday, May 16th for the Kansas City Vasculitis Regional Symposium Educational Conference to be held August 6, 2016 at the KU Edwards Campus, BEST Building, 12600 Quivira Rd., Overland Park, KS.  Registration deadline will be July 29th.  Denny and Joyce talked about the agenda for the one day regional conference.  Denny asked for volunteers to moderate the diagnosis specific break out sessions.
Attendees were asked to introduce themselves and provide a brief update on their vasculitis status.

The next KS/MO Chapter, Vasculitis Foundation support group meeting will be Saturday, May 14, 2016, from 1pm to 3pm at the BEST Conference Center, Room 125, University of Kansas Edwards Campus, 12600 Quivira Rd, Overland Park, KS 66213.

Dr. Jeremy Stevenson, Psychologist, University of Kansas Medical Center, Clinical Assistant Professor, will give a presentation on coping with chronic illness.

After the presentation we’ll talk about the upcoming Vasculitis Symposium, August 6th, and what we can do to help.

Minutes - March 12, 2016 Support Group Meeting

The Kansas City Support Group met on Saturday, March 12 in room 125 BEST Conference Center, University of Kansas Edwards Campus.  Present were Shannon Morgan, Brad and Debbie Yates, Glenn and Arlene Kullman, Allison Lint, Linda and Jim Gibson, Sondra Schmidt, Erin Symmonds, Jeanette Okerstrom, and Denny and Ruth Hale.

Dr. W. Abraham White, ophthalmologist from the University of Kansas Medical Center presented a program on
Inflammation and the Eye.  He concluded by answering questions from the audience.

Denny Hale, current support group leader, talked about the upcoming symposium in August, and announced that Jerry Niebaum, prior support group leader, had passed away in January.  Several members of the group had attended his memorial service in February.  Jerry will be missed.

Attendees were asked to introduce themselves and provide a brief update on their vasculitis status.  The meeting was concluded by distributing copies of the book, Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA) and Microscopic Polyangiitis (MPA).

The next meeting will be May 14, 2016, same time, same place.

Minutes - Dec 12, 2015 Meeting


The Kansas City Vasculitis Support Group met on Saturday, December 12 in room 125 BEST Conference center, University of Kansas Edwards Campus.  Present were Sondra Schmidt, Linda Gibson, Jim Gibson, Shannon Morgan, Glen Kullman, Arlene Kullman, Joyce Kullman, Denny Hale, and Ruth Hale.

Denny Hale, Chapter Leader, opened the meeting giving an update on Jerry Niebaum, the former chapter leader’s health.  At his request, Denny explained the progression of Jerry’s stage 4 Merkel Cell Carcinoma, and his recent journey from the hospital to home Hospice care.  A card was passed around for members to sign, wishing him well, and thanking him for his years of service leading the chapter.

Joyce Kullman, Vasculitis Foundation Executive Director, provided an informative presentation introducing the VF YouTube Education Channel and the Awareness Channel and webinars.  She also mentioned the Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.org/), Cleveland Clinic (http://my.clevelandclinic.org/), and UNC Kidney Center (http://unckidneycenter.org/) websites as sources for educational information.

Joyce announced the Vasculitis Foundation received an award from Nonprofit Connect, a Kansas City based organization that works with other nonprofit organizations throughout the country to connect them to resources, education, and networking opportunities.  The VF won the award, called a Philly Award, for the Best Long Video, for work done by Ed Becker with his “Extraordinary Vasculitis Patient Stories”.

The meeting concluded with members introducing themselves and providing a brief update on their vasculitis status.
The next meeting will be March 12, 2016 at the same location.  The guest speaker will be Dr W. A. White, Ophthalmologist from the University of Kansas Medical Center.  Dr White will explain the effect of vasculitis, and the drugs we take, on our eyes.
